Héctor Escobar Gutiérrez (1941-2014) was a singular figure within a generation of self-taught outcasts. His work encompassed a counter-current influenced by decadentism, literary horror, alternative spirituality, and satanism. In a Latin American cultural context that often prioritized practical instruction for basic sustenance, Escobar Gutiérrez stood out for his dedication to the art of the spirit, with poetry as his primary vehicle for exploring and projecting his vision of the Beyond.

Escobar Gutiérrez became an anomaly in his native Pereira and, by extension, in Colombia and Latin America. His connection to satanism, symbolized by his self-proclaimed title of Black Pope, placed him alongside figures such as Anton Szandor LaVey on the global stage.
